Hitachi Rail and partners have launched a digital solution to streamline intermodal freight in Germany. The platform, called 'InGa-Z', was developed through the joint venture Protostellar, which includes Hitachi Rail, MT Logistics, DB Cargo; and funding from the Federal Ministry for Transport. Part of the federal 'Future of Rail Freight Transport' programme, InGa-Z provides a terminal operating system and mobile apps that aim to digitalise, simplify, and accelerate processes at freight terminals, as the company reported.

Features include cloud-based container management, automated order processing, contactless check-in, AI load optimisation, and real-time status updates. According to Hitachi Rail operational trials at the Philippsthal terminal since July 2025 lead to the following 'real-world impact': 50% less check-in time, 70% fewer manual entries, and an additional loading unit per train.
